Emergency Response Protocols

  1. Make sure students (and yourself) are out of immediate danger.
  2. If students are injured or ill, seek medical care at nearest medical facility.
    • If the injury or sickness is not urgent, you may contact On-Call for health care provider recommendations.
  3. Gather information about the situation. Focus on the who/what/where/when/how.
  4. Contact Global Safety & Operations at Drexel. Be prepared with your newly gathered information.
  5. If you have not yet, contact On-Call.
  6. To the extent possible, stay with the injured or sick student.
    • In the immediate aftermath, this requires a consistent presence. After stabilization, you will need to stay in the same city, but do not need to stay at bedside 24/7.
  7. Now that the injuries or illnesses are stabilized, focus on program continuity.
    • Have a plan to run your program without your presence, without the presence of your co-leader, and/or without the presence of some of your students. Global Safety & Operations can assist you with this plan.
  8. Be prepared to give and receive updates to and from Drexel. Frequency as little as once per day, but as often as once per hour. Please take each contact seriously as they are vital for information building, decision making, and ensuring the safety of everyone on the ground.
  9. As the affected party recovers from injury or illness, make plans for next steps.
    • This usually is related to students rejoining the program, faculty rejoining the program, or travel back to the U.S. Following an incident, Drexel University must know where its students, faculty, and staff are located at all times until their return to the U.S.
  10. Upon returning home, please be ready to debrief with Global Safety & Operations. Any information you provide will help us improve our processes for future travelers.
